Planning Your Reception Music: DJ or Live Band?

There are several things to think about when choosing a DJ or live band for your wedding celebration. We’ve put together a few important questions to ask yourself, as well as a list of questions to ask the musicians and DJs you consider hiring for your reception music.

What kind of music do you like?
Whether you choose a DJ or a live band, base your choice on your personal music taste and what will make the night enjoyable for you and your partner. DJs can provide a wide variety of music that can be customized to your preferences. Although they may only play a certain genre or limited playlist, live bands offer dynamic performances that ensure an extra-memorable event.

If you find yourself struggling with song choices and music styles, keep in mind that knowing what you don’t like is just as important as knowing what you do like. Think about it from all angles!

What kind of music will suit your venue?
Live bands require space for instruments and sound equipment. DJs are the better choice for smaller or non-traditional venues, as their equipment is more compact and easier to set up. You may want to check the venue’s electrical setup and noise restrictions before making your choice. Does the venue have a sound system or speakers on hand?

What can you afford?
Prices can vary widely, but DJs are usually the more cost-effective choice. Live bands are typically more expensive due to the number of performers, plus the extra equipment and setup. When talking with potential musicians and disc jockeys, make sure you understand their pricing structure, including overtime and cancellation fees.

Who do you connect with?
Although it might seem like they’re all doing the same thing, every DJ is unique and would bring a different atmosphere to your wedding reception. The best way to determine who shares your vision for your wedding day is to talk with vendors in person and see who you connect with. The most convenient way to meet multiple DJs in person is to attend an event like The Wonderful of Weddings, where you can become acquainted and ask questions in a comfortable setting.

Questions to ask your DJ or band:

  • Are you available on our wedding day?
  • For the setup and sound check, what do you need and how long will it take?
  • Will you act as emcee and make announcements?
  • How long will you play, and how many breaks will you need?
  • Is there an overtime fee if the reception runs longer than expected?
  • Can you perform the specific songs we want?
  • How will you handle song requests from our guests?

Start planning your reception music now and bring your questions with you to the 58th Annual Wonderful World of Weddings Show, which will be held January 10-11, 2026, at the Exposition Center at Wisconsin State Fair Park. Tickets for the show will go on sale in September 2025.
