Wedding Dress Shopping Tips | Do’s and Don’ts for Brides
Shopping for your wedding dress is exciting, but it can also be stressful. We’ve assembled the most important wedding dress shopping tips with simple do’s and don’ts for brides to help find exactly the right dress.
Wedding Dress Shopping Tips: The Do’s

Do: Set a Realistic Budget First
The budget will need to include the dress, alterations, veil, shoes, undergarments, and accessories, as well as cleaning and preservation after the wedding. Some of these will cost more than you expect.
Do: Research Dress Styles
Which style is right for you? The most common wedding dress silhouettes are:
- A-Line – universally flattering
- Mermaid/Fit-and-Flare – highlights curves
- Ball Gown – classic princess style
- Sheath/Column – sleek and modern
It’s good to have inspiration while staying open-minded. Many brides fall in love with something completely different from what they planned.

Do: Bring a Small, Supportive Crew Along
Choose just a few people you trust who understand the vision for your wedding and won’t overpower your opinion. Guests shouldn’t pressure you, confuse you, or shift the focus away from what you love.
Do: Wear the Right Undergarments
When trying on wedding dresses, you’ll want to be dressed for accuracy and comfort. Good choices are seamless, skin-colored underwear and a strapless bra. Limit makeup and skin products to protect the gowns. To get the full effect, make sure you move around in the dresses—sitting, walking, dancing, and lifting your arms.
Do: Ask About Timelines
Many dresses can take 6-9 months to arrive, and rush orders will cost extra. Also, keep in mind that alterations might require multiple fittings.
Wedding Dress Shopping Tips: The Don’ts

Don’t: Shop Too Early
Although it’s good to plan, if yours is a long engagement, you don’t want to start shopping too early. Styles change, tastes change, and bodies change. The sweet spot is usually 9–12 months before the wedding.
Don’t: Try on Over-Budget Dresses
Even if you’re just curious or having fun, stay disciplined and don’t try on the dresses that exceed your budget. They will only create disappointment.

Don’t: Shop When You’re Not Feeling It
It’s best to shop for your wedding dress when you feel energized and confident. If you’re tired, hungry, or feeling negative emotions, you might rush the decision and feel pressured to say yes. Be well rested, eat beforehand, take your time, trust your gut, and don’t obsess over the size numbers on the tags (bridal sizing runs smaller than street sizing).
Bonus Wedding Dress Shopping Tips
- When shopping off the rack, a dress that’s slightly too big can be tailored, while a dress that’s too small is much harder to fix. Fit can change, but structure cannot.
- Wedding boutique lighting is meant to be flattering. When possible, try to find natural light and take photos and short videos to really see how the dress looks and moves.
- Consider how the dress will look in your chosen venue and with your chosen hairstyle. Is this the dress that brings your wedding vision to life?

The goal isn’t just to find a beautiful dress, but to find it without pressure or regret. At the 59th Annual Wonderful World of Weddings Show in January 2027, there will be multiple vendors available in a stress-free setting to discuss the process of choosing and altering your wedding dress. You’ll see a wide variety of dress styles throughout the Exposition Center at Wisconsin State Fair Park, as well as on the runway during our daily fashion shows.
